The Ultimate 4-Day DownEast Adventure: Jonesport & Sea Duck Cottage (2026 Guide)
Looking for the “Real Maine”? Skip the crowds of the south and head DownEast. This 4-day itinerary takes you through the rugged beauty of Jonesport and Beals Island, using the oceanfront Sea Duck Cottage as your luxurious coastal sanctuary.
Day 1: Arrival & The Sawyer Cove Sunset
-
3:00 PM – Check-in at Sea Duck Cottage: Arrive and breathe in the salt air. Take a moment to walk your private 300ft of shoreline. The granite rocks and “sea duck” sightings start right here.
-
5:00 PM – Local Provisions: Head into Jonesport to Moosabec Variety. Pro tip for 2026: Join the local lobstermen at the community table or grab their famous homemade banana bread and fresh crab rolls for a picnic back at the cottage.
-
7:30 PM – Sunset on the Deck: There is no better view in Washington County than the sunset from the Sea Duck wrap-around deck. Watch the lobster boats return to the reach as the sky turns purple.
Day 2: The Rugged “Bold Coast” & Puffins
-
8:00 AM – Puffin Watching: Drive 25 minutes to Cutler for a tour with Bold Coast Charter. As of 2026, they remain the only U.S. boat authorized to land at Machias Seal Island. Seeing the Atlantic Puffins up close is a bucket-list experience.
-
Note: Reservations open March 11, 2026—book early!
-
-
1:00 PM – Hike Great Wass Island: Cross the bridge to Beals. The Great Wass Island Preserve offers a 4.5-mile trek through rare jack pines to high cliffs overlooking the Atlantic. It’s wild, quiet, and quintessential Maine.
-
6:00 PM – Lobster Dinner: Pick up live lobsters directly from a local Jonesport co-op and use the cottage’s lobster pot for an authentic shore dinner.
Day 3: Blueberries, Falls, and Hidden Beaches
-
10:00 AM – Wild Blueberry Land: You’re in the heart of blueberry country. Visit the giant blueberry-shaped museum in Columbia Falls for a 2026 “Farm Charm” experience. Grab a blueberry pie—it’s mandatory.
-
1:00 PM – Bad Little Falls: Head to Machias to see the churning waters of Bad Little Falls Park. It’s a great spot for photography and a quick riverside walk.
-
3:30 PM – Jasper Beach: Visit nearby Machiasport to see Jasper Beach. Instead of sand, this beach is made of millions of smooth, colorful volcanic stones that “sing” when the waves retreat.
Day 4: Moosabec Reach & The Working Waterfront
-
9:00 AM – Explore Sawyer Square: Walk the historic streets of Jonesport. Visit the Peabody Memorial Library (over 100 years old) and the Jonesport Historical Society to learn about the town’s seafaring past.
Reserve the property today: Sea Duck Cottage(s) is 1 Main Oceanfront Home with beach access and the ability to add a Guest House to the Reservation
